Berry Dump Cake

This mixed berry dump cake starts with frozen berries and a box of cake mix, then bakes into a dessert with layers of sweet fruit and buttery cake. As it bakes, the berries become thick and jammy while the topping turns crisp and golden. It’s an easy way to turn a few pantry staples into a warm fruit dessert.

Easy Frozen Berry Dump Cake

I’ve made dozens of dump cakes over the years because they’re simple to make and always bring that classic comfort-food feel to the dessert table. Most of my dump cake recipes start with pie filling, like my Strawberry Dump Cake and Easy Lemon Dump Cake, so this mixed berry version is a little different.

Instead of canned filling, this recipe uses frozen mixed berries that bake into a thick, fruity layer beneath the buttery cake topping. I prefer using frozen berries because they’re already washed and prepped, making this recipe even easier to assemble. I usually pick up two 12-ounce bags from the store and keep them on hand specifically for recipes like this.

Ingredients

  • Frozen mixed berries – Create the fruit filling and provide a blend of berry flavors throughout the dessert.
  • Granulated sugar – Adds sweetness and helps balance the tartness of the berries.
  • White cake mix – Forms the soft, buttery topping as the cake bakes.
  • Salted butter – Adds richness and helps the cake mix bake into a golden topping.

How to Make Mixed Berry Dump Cake

  1. Prep – Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Add the berries – Spread the frozen mixed berries evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the sugar over the berries.
  3. Add the cake mix – Evenly sprinkle the dry cake mix over the berry mixture, covering the fruit completely.
  4. Top with butter – Arrange the thin slices of butter across the surface of the cake mix, covering as much of the dry mix as possible.
Four steps to make a berry dessert: frozen berries, sugar, flour, then butter slices on top.
  1. Bake – Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the berry filling is bubbling around the edges.
  2. Cool and serve – Let the dump cake cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Use a different cake mix – Yellow cake mix, butter cake mix, or lemon cake mix all work well with the berry filling.
  • Try a single berry variety – Replace the mixed berries with all blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, or a combination of your favorites.
  • Add citrus flavor – Sprinkle fresh lemon zest over the berries before adding the cake mix for a brighter flavor.
  • Include a crunchy topping – Add chopped pecans, walnuts, or sliced almonds over the butter before baking.
  • Adjust the sweetness – Increase or decrease the sugar slightly depending on the sweetness of your berry blend.
  • Use unsalted butter – If using unsalted butter, add a small pinch of salt over the cake mix layer to maintain balance.
  • Swap the fruit – This same method works with frozen peaches, cherries, or a mixed fruit blend.

Tips for Success

  • Keep the berries frozen – Add the berries straight from the freezer so they release their juices as the dump cake bakes.
  • Cover the cake mix evenly – Spread the dry cake mix into an even layer to help the topping bake consistently.
  • Slice the butter thinly – Thin slices cover more surface area, helping eliminate dry patches in the topping.
  • Watch for dry spots – If you notice any dry cake mix during baking, place a small piece of butter over the area to help it bake evenly.
  • Let it rest before serving – Allow the dump cake to cool for about 10 minutes so the berry filling can thicken slightly.
