Easy Nutter Butter Chick Cookies

I’m such a fan of cute desserts, especially ones that are easy enough to make with kids. These Nutter Butter chick cookies deliver on all fronts—simple, no-bake, and absolutely adorable. They come together quickly with just a few ingredients, and I love that there’s no complicated decorating involved. Just dip, decorate, and you’re done.

Last Thanksgiving, we made little Nutter Butter Turkeys for the table, and they were such a hit that I knew I needed a spring version for Easter. These chick cookies were the perfect solution. They look great on a dessert tray, but I also love using them as festive place settings. Plus, you can make them a few days ahead of time and they hold up beautifully.

Ingredients

Assorted candies and cookies in bowls: Nutter Butters, nonpareils, various M&Ms, yellow candy melts.

Making the Easter Chicks

  1. Prep – Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Melt yellow candy melts according to package instructions until smooth.
  2. Dip the cookies – Working one at a time, dip each Nutter Butter cookie into the melted candy. Use a fork to lift it out, gently tap off excess coating, then place on the prepared tray.

  1. Add the features – While the coating is still wet, press on two yellow M&Ms for wings, one orange mini M&M for the beak, two black nonpareils for eyes, and two orange M&Ms at the bottom for feet. If using, add red mini M&Ms at the top for a little comb.

  1. Let set – Allow cookies to set completely at room temperature. They can be refrigerated to speed up the setting if needed, but note that M&M details may appear cloudy, and nonpareils could bleed.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Make white chicks – Swap the candy melts for white chocolate or vanilla almond bark and make white chicks.
  • Use different cookies – If peanut butter isn’t a favorite, try oval sandwich cookies such as Vienna Fingers or Cameo Cremes as a base.
  • Use Reese’s Pieces – Swap in Reese’s Pieces for the wings and feet to keep the peanut butter flavor going.
  • Add texture – Sprinkle on shredded coconut or sanding sugar before the coating sets for a fun, fuzzy look.
  • Use candy melts for details – Pipe melted candy melts to create beaks, eyes, or combs instead of using candy pieces.

Tips for Success

  • Work one at a time – Dip and decorate one cookie at a time so the coating doesn’t set before you add the features.
  • Use tweezers or toothpicks – These can help place small candies like nonpareils more precisely.
  • Stir candy melts often – Keep the coating smooth by stirring regularly while dipping.
  • Don’t overheat the candy melts – Overheating can cause them to seize or thicken; melt slowly and gently for best results.
  • Let set at room temperature – Refrigeration can speed things up but may cause candy pieces to cloud or bleed.

Storage

Store the decorated cookies in a single layer in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. If stacking is necessary, place wax paper or parchment between layers to protect the decorations. Avoid storing in the refrigerator, as the candy coating and M&M details may become cloudy or bleed from condensation.
