These Cookie Monster cookies begin with a basic sugar cookie mix and are transformed into a fun and tasty treat with the addition of cookie pieces and chocolate chips. They’re a fun way to add some character to your homemade treats.
Easy Cookie Monster Cookies
Watching Sesame Street is one of my earliest memories, and Cookie Monster always stood out as such a fun character. His love for cookies is infectious. These bright blue Cookie Monster cookies remind me of those happy times.
I love the ease of these cookies, especially since they start from a mix. Just mix the cookie base, color it blue, add the cookie bits and chocolate chips, bake, and NOM NOM NOM, you’ll be enjoying your cookies in no time. They add a playful touch to any occasion and are perfect for parties or just because you want a fun treat.

Ingredients
- Sugar cookie mix – The base of our cookies, providing a sweet and soft foundation that’s easy to work with.
- Salted butter – Adds richness and a hint of salt to balance the sweetness. You can use unsalted butter if you prefer.
- Large Egg – Binds the ingredients together and gives the cookies structure.
- Vanilla – Transforms the cookies from a basic sugar cookie by adding warmth and depth.
- Blue gel food coloring – Gives the cookies their iconic bright blue color, just like Cookie Monster.
- Mini Oreo Cookies – Adds crunch and a bit of chocolatey goodness.
- Mini Chips Ahoy! – Brings in more cookie bits for texture and extra cookie flavor.
- White chocolate chips – Adds sweetness and a creamy texture.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips – Balances the sweetness with a slightly bitter chocolate flavor.
- Candy eyeballs – The finishing touch that makes these cookies look like Cookie Monster. I used jumbo eyes, which can be found in the baking aisle at most craft stores.
Making the Cookie Monster Cookies Recipe
- Prepare – Preheat the oven to the temperature specified on the sugar cookie mix package. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
- Prepare the dough – Combine the sugar cookie mix, softened butter, egg, and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Mix until a dough forms. I like to use an electric mixer to make it easier.
- Color the dough – Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the dough and mix until evenly colored. Adjust the color to your liking.
- Add mix-ins – Gently fold in the mini Oreos, Mini Chips Ahoy!, and chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Form the cookies – Using a large cookie scoop (approximately 3 tablespoons), scoop portions of dough and roll them into balls. Place the balls onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each cookie.
- Bake – Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 13-16 minutes or until the edges are set.
- Decorate – As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, gently press candy eyeballs onto each cookie while they’re still warm.
- Cool and enjoy – Allow the cookies to cool on the cookie sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, serve and enjoy your adorable blue cookies!
Variations and substitutions
Homemade cookie dough – Instead of a sugar cookie mix, you can use your favorite homemade chocolate chip cookie dough recipe as the base for these cookies.
Full-size Oreos and Chips Ahoy! – If you don’t have minis, you can use full-size Oreos and Chips Ahoy! cookies. Chop them into smaller pieces before adding them to the dough.
Change up the chocolate chips – Get creative with the chocolate chips by using different varieties such as milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or even peanut butter chips for a unique flavor twist.
Cake mix cookie base – For a different flavor profile, you can use a cake mix cookie base instead of a sugar cookie mix. Check out my Christmas Cake Mix Cookie recipe for a simple cake mix cookie.
Stuffed cookies – For a decadent twist, try making stuffed Cookie Monster cookies inspired by the TikTok viral recipe. You can stuff each cookie with a piece of chocolate or add a whole Oreo cookie in the center before baking. Just place a portion of dough around the chocolate or Oreo, ensuring it’s completely enclosed, then bake as usual. The result is a delightful surprise of gooey chocolate or creamy Oreo filling inside each cookie, perfect for satisfying any sweet tooth craving.
Tips for success
- Avoid over-baking – Keep an eye on the cookies towards the end of the baking time to prevent them from becoming too crisp. They should be lightly golden around the edges but still soft in the center.
- Reshape if needed – The mix-ins may cause the cookies to bake unevenly or spread irregularly. If necessary, reshape the cookies by swirling a slightly larger cookie cutter around them immediately after they come out of the oven to give them a rounder shape.
- Apply candy eyes promptly – Press the candy eyeballs into the baked cookies as soon as they come out of the oven while the cookies are still warm. This ensures that the eyes stick securely to the cookies. If you wait too long and the eyeballs don’t stick, you can use melted chocolate to attach them.
- Use gel food coloring – Opt for gel rather than liquid food coloring as it provides a more intense color with less product. This helps achieve the vibrant blue color for your Cookie Monster cookies without altering the consistency of the dough.
- Enhance appearance – Reserve some cookie pieces and chocolate chips to place on top of the cookie dough balls before baking for a more attractive appearance.
How to store the cookies
Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days. Place a piece of parchment paper between layers to prevent them from sticking together.
To freeze, place the cooled cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe container or bag, placing parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking. They can be stored in the freezer for 2-3 months. Thaw the cookies at room temperature before serving or briefly warm them in the oven for a freshly baked taste.
