Easy Holiday Charcuterie Board

Appetizers have always been my favorite course, and cheese boards are right at the top of that list. Honestly, I’ve been known to skip the main dish entirely and just make a meal out of a good charcuterie board.

I’m always looking for an excuse to put together a fun board, and what better time than Christmas? This Christmas tree charcuterie board is one of my favorites to make. It’s festive, easy to assemble, and feels like a centerpiece and appetizer all in one. I’ve shared exactly what I used for this one as a starting point, but the best part is how customizable it is. You can easily swap in your favorite cheeses, fruits, or meats and make it your own.

Ingredients

One of the best things about charcuterie boards is there are no rules. You can customize them and make them your own, use different types of cheeses and your favorite meats. Below, you will find some recommendations of items to include a Christmas charcuterie board.

  • Cheeses – Use a variety of your favorite cheeses. I recommend a mix of soft, semi-soft, and hard cheeses such as brie, blue cheese, cheddar, gouda, and goat cheese. The choices really are endless when it comes to this addition.
  • Meats – Offer a selection of cured meats like prosciutto, salami, and chorizo for a savory balance.
  • Fresh fruits – Add a touch of sweetness with fresh fruits like raspberries, blackberries, grapes, figs, or mandarine segments. Cranberries and pomegranate seeds make a great festive garnish for the Christmas tree cheese board.
  • Olives and pickles – Briny flavors from olives and pickles are a great addition that complements the richness of cheese and meats.
  • Dried fruits – Apricots, dates, or dried cranberries can provide a chewy contrast.
  • Nuts – Almonds, walnuts, pecans, or pistachios add crunch and depth to your board. Try toasting the nuts for an added depth of flavor.
  • Crackers or pretzels – Either option makes a excellent trunk for the tree. Serve additional crackers or sliced baguette on the side. There is nothing worse than not having enough crackers on a cheese board.
  • Fresh herbs – Sprigs of rosemary or thyme serve as the foliage elements of the tree and bring an aromatic touch.
  • Condiments – Elevate flavors with spreads like honey, mustard, and chutney.

Assembling the Christmas Tree Charcuterie

  1. Start with the tree trunk – Place pretzel sticks or crackers at the bottom center of your board to form the tree base. You can overlap or stack them slightly for dimension.
  2. Layer the cheese and meats – Begin building the tree shape from the bottom up, alternating rows of cheeses and meats. Vary colors and textures to keep it visually interesting.
  3. Add fruits and extras – Fill in the spaces with fresh fruits, olives, pickles, dried fruits, and nuts. Try to keep the overall shape of the tree as you build upward.
  4. Use herbs to shape the tree – Tuck sprigs of rosemary or thyme along the edges and between layers to mimic the look of evergreen branches.
  5. Top it off and garnish – Cut a piece of cheddar into a star for the top of the tree, or use another festive shape. Add a handful of cranberries or pomegranate seeds for extra holiday color. I love these cutters for making the cheese stars.
  6. Serve with extras on the side – Place additional crackers or baguette slices nearby, along with small bowls of condiments like honey or mustard.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Gluten-Free Tree – Charcuterie is easy to keep gluten-free. Most full-fat cheeses are naturally gluten-free, and you can find plenty of gluten-free meats and crackers to use. Swap the trunk for gluten-free pretzels or crisps and double-check labels if using flavored options.
  • Vegan Twist – Use your favorite plant-based cheeses and swap in vegan deli slices or marinated tofu. Fresh veggies like bell peppers, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes help fill out the board while keeping it colorful and fresh.
  • Fruit Tree – Go fully sweet with a fruit-only version. Berries, grapes, apple slices, mandarin segments, pineapple, and mango work well. A little lime juice will help prevent browning if you’re using apples, pears, or bananas.
  • Spicy Tree – Add a kick with spicy cured meats like chorizo or hot soppressata. Pair with jalapeño slices, spicy cheese, or a spoonful of hot pepper jelly to turn up the heat.
  • Italian Antipasto Board – Focus on Italian flavors with meats like prosciutto and salami, marinated artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, and cheeses like provolone and mozzarella.
  • Brunch-Inspired Board – Turn it into a brunch board by using bacon or sausage links as the trunk, then build the tree with mini bagels, wedges of cream cheese, fresh fruit, and even bite-sized quiches or pastries.

Tips for Success

  • Plan your layout before placing – Do a quick dry run by arranging items on the board without committing. This helps with spacing and color balance.
  • Cut cheeses into a mix of shapes – Use cubes, wedges, and stars or rounds to add visual interest.
  • Keep the tree shape in mind – Start wide at the bottom and taper as you go up. Use herbs and small items to define the edges and keep the outline clear.
  • Balance colors and textures – Alternate soft and hard textures, and place pops of color (like berries or olives) across the board to keep it from looking too uniform.
  • Use smaller items to fill gaps – Dried fruit, nuts, and cranberries are perfect for filling in empty spots and helping the tree feel full and complete.
  • Drain fresh mozzarella – If using fresh mozzarella balls, drain them on a paper towel before adding to the board. This helps reduce excess moisture, preventing a soggy or diluted texture in surrounding ingredients.
